What is the origin of “ the proms ” ?
We have to go back to the XVIII and XIX centuries to discover the growing popularity of open air music mixed with pastoral pleasures, mystery and surprises.
Indeed it is in the Vauxhall Gardens of London, south of the Thames, that promenade concerts begin to attract the crowds and the fashionable world in earnest.
In 1895, The Proms assume a more formal aspect in which the public promenade during indoor performances, allowing larger numbers to enjoy great music at a modest price.
