The village was founded by monks in the eighth century, under the authority of the monastery at Sauve, on a ‘calle berte’ (a green shoulder) – hence the name ‘Calberte’.[source] |
A Time for Boys and their Wars
In the fourteenth century the Pope Urbain V, who was born in the Cevennes, founded a seminary. Later, for several centuries, this peaceful landscape was torn first by religious wars and then by the upheaval of the French Revolution.
In 1825, ten years after the defeat of Napoleon, the existing Temple was built on land belonging to La Garde. The building, of impressive proportions, bears witness to a much bigger population at the time.[source]

The XIX century saw unprecedented prosperity in the Cevenols valleys as silk farming flourished. This was a time when the narrow streets of the village echoed with the voices of girls and young women engaged in the production and spinning of silk. At that time the village had ten watermills and thirteen cafés. [source] |
