Giles Swayne

Born in 1946, Giles Swayne began his professional career as pianist, repetiteur and composer ; but since 1975 he has concentrated on composition. In 1976-77 he made a series of visits to the Paris Conservatoire at the invitation of Olivier Messiaen. In 1980 he completed CRY, for 28 solo voices, amplified and electronically treated. This piece, which lasts about 80 minutes, has been performed all over the world – and twice at the Albert Hall during the 1983 and 1994 Proms. Between 1990 and 1996 Swayne lived in Ghana. Since 2007 he has been composer in residence at Clare College, Cambridge.
