Violin and baroque violin |
Malu Lin grew up near Aberystwyth, where she studied with Robert Jacoby. At the age of nineteen she was runner-up in the TSB All Wales Young Musician of the Year 1984 competition. This resulted in concerto appearances with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, amongst others. She read music at York University, where she studied violin with Christopher Rowland. She continued with him at the Royal Northern College of Music, and led a string quartet which won all the chamber music prizes at the college, and whose performances of Tippett and Shostakovich won critical acclaim. Whilst at the RNCM she was also awarded scholarships and prizes for her solo playing, one of which led to a performance of the Berg violin concerto with the college orchestra. She has also performed the Tchaikovsky and Brahms concertos, both to enthusiastic reviews. Malu performs regularly on baroque violin, and has played in the UK and abroad with the Gabrieli Ensemble and Florilegium; she is also a regular guest leader with Fiori Musicali. On the modern violin she plays regularly with Glyndebourne on Tour and Garsington Opera, freelances with other groups, including the Guildhall String Ensemble, and has a duo partnerhip with her husband Giles Swayne.
